The lake rests almost at the center of a triangle marked by Canton, Athens and Tyler, all of which provide “County Seat” shopping. And of course, Canton also has the distinction of hosting one of the nation’s largest monthly flea-markets, every “First Monday” weekend.
The Lake is just over an hours drive from Dallas (to the northwest), about 15 minutes from Canton at the north, 15 minutes from Athens (to the southwest), or about 30 minutes drive from Tyler (on the east). Other nearby towns include Edom on the east (about five miles), Murchison to the south (about 7 miles), and Ben Wheeler to the north (about 8 miles).
From Dallas, go southeast on Interstate-20 to Canton, south on Texas 19 (toward Athens), east 3 miles on FM1861 and turn east onto FM 2339 and drive 9 miles due east. Or from Canton, you can also go southeast on Texas 64 to Ben Wheeler, then south on FM 773 and turn east on FM 2339 for 1.7 miles. The lake is on your left when you see the long white fence.
Here at Hickory Hills, at the south edge of Van Zandt county in the heart of East Texas, blue and green are two of our favorite colors. Blue because of the sparkling waters of Callender Lake, which is at the center of our “Little Bit of Heaven,” and green because of the forested lake lots in our gated community of just over 500 residents.
Whether you are looking for a weekend getaway, or a retirement spot, at Hickory Hills you can kick back and just take it easy, or get the whole family involved, and participate in the various community activities. Take a look around our website, and get a feel for the great community we are building here! And then come, Join Us!

CALLENDER LAKE
Callender Lake is a 365 acre private lake in East Texas, surrounded by two separate gated subdivisions, “Hickory Hills” on the west side, and “Callender Lake” on the east side. Being ‘a gated community’ means that the only way to gain access to either of the subdivisions and the lake is to own property there, or to be the invited guest of a property owner. Callender Lake is a constant level lake, one of only a few in Texas, being fed by seven different streams and water sources. Because the lake is stocked regularly, there is excellent fishing, both by boat and from the shore. Fishing is reserved for residents only and their guests.
Jet Skis, power boats, sailing boats, and fishing boats are all allowed. However because this is a private lake, there is relatively little boat traffic. Both east and west sides allow boat docks. Each of the two subdivisions have different restrictions and requirements. The east (Callender Lake) side only allows site-built homes, and therefore has more restrictions than the west (Hickory Hills) side, which also allows mobile homes. The Callender Lake side has a community boat ramp, fishing pier, children's park, and a swim beach with picnic areas and bathrooms. The Hickory Hills side has a community boat ramp, children’s park, basketball court, swimming pool, two public restrooms.
THE COMMUNITY & FACILITIES
Hickory Hills is just good East Texas fun! The fishing is great and the lake is large enough for boating, jet skies, etc., but still "close to home." The maintenance fees and county taxes are low; the fishing and recreational benefits are high!
The Swimming Pool and Pavilion
The Swimming Pool is located next to the Pavilion, near the main entrance, and is open from Memorial Day throughout the summer for Hickory Hills property owners and their guests.
Two Bathhouses
There are two public restrooms/bathhouses - for swimmers and campers - one by the swimming pool, and the other at the David Poole Park Playground. A public phone is available at the swimming pool bathhouse.
The David Poole Playground
The David Poole Playground, located near the north end of the lake on Hickory Hills Drive, provides play equipment and open free space for our children and families to run, play, fly a kite, and just have fun! Public restrooms are also provided at the playground area.
The Boat Ramp & Fishing Piers
The public boat ramp is located near the pavilion and front gate. There is a fishing pier nearby for the use of our residents who do not want to launch a boat. Fishing on this private lake is reserved for residents and their guests, and the lake is restocked seasonally. A second fishing pier is located at the swimming area at the northern part of the lake.
HHPOIA Services
Quarterly Maintenance Dues from the residents go to maintain the public areas of the Hickory Hills community, including street maintenance, street signs, lake and dam maintenance, swimming pool and pavilion maintenance, HHPOIA office costs, mowing and maintaining the public areas, etc.
